Jim Jarmusch’s Only Lovers Left Alive is an iconic film, and this class is a deep dive into its inspirations, influences, and interpretations. This class will focus on various influences and references to both lesser-known and famous literary works as well as a comparison of the shooting script and the final cut. Additionally, the class will cover the way the film presents challenges regarding depression (Content warning: suicidal ideation) and living in isolation. In Jim Jarmusch’s own words, “These two lovers are archetypal outsiders, classic bohemians, extremely intelligent and sophisticated — yet still in full possession of their animal instincts. They have traveled the world and experienced many remarkable things, always inhabiting the shadowed margins of society.” An exploration of love, loss, yearning, depression, and grief, this film about vampires nonetheless offers a window into some of the most “human” challenges in life.
Class comes with a PDF of lecture notes for reference, delivered after the class ends.
